Self Esteem Improvement
What is Self Esteem?
Self esteem is the way we think and feel about ourselves. It's our opinion of ourselves and it is not something we are born with, it's something we develop as we go along through life. Low self esteem causes many problems and can make life much more difficult and miserable than it need be. It has been linked with depression, suicide, eating disorders, alcohol and substance abuse, poor body image, extreme lack of confidence, teenage pregnancies, and self harm.
The major contributing factors are:
- Criticism from others (past and present) - parents, teachers, employers or partners
- Repeated and constant criticism makes people feel they are no good and will probably never be any good enough
- Abuse from others (past and present) - verbal abuse (name calling and taunting) or physical abuse (being bullied at school, having an abusive partner, sexual abuse etc)
- Constant Self Criticism - focussing much more on what's gone wrong than everything that's gone right in life, dwelling on failures and misgivings, quite often dwelling on things that have happened in the past, rather than looking forward to the future, with hope, often feeling guilty or to blame.
This can lead to:
- Hopelessness - feeling that a part of life is out of control, saying things like "I can't control myself"
- Helplessness - feeling like things will never get better or ever change - no matter what we do or try and saying things like "I can't help it"
- Constant feeling of failure - usually caused by getting frustrated at tasks and saying things like "I am a complete failure" and "I always fail at this"
- Worthlessness - feeling useless or worthless, giving very little value to what's been achieved, or problems that have been overcome
- Negative self talk - repeatedly thinking "I am useless, no good, a failure, fat, ugly, horrible, a mess" and "I hate myself, my looks, my body"
- Magnifying thoughts - if one thing goes wrong everything goes wrong
People with low self esteem are often victims in life, of crime, of abuse, and bullying from others. If we cannot accept ourselves, nobody else will either. They are often locked into a negative mind set for many years and "stuck" in self destructive and negative patterns. They see the worst in everything.
However frightening it may be to recognise that you have low self esteem and to do something about it, the benefits are very rewarding, and well worthwhile. It is not difficult to get out of these negative patterns.
I offer you hypnotherapy in Reading and the surrounding areas to combat these problems, advanced hypnotherapy can certainly help overcome this problem about 4 to 5 sessions.
